All transactions were on a strictly cash basis.

No one in that situation would have thought it possible to have to say,” I lost my job can’t pay bills.” In an even earlier time, people who couldn’t pay their bills were taken to debtor’s prison. The conundrum was how could someone earn the money to pay their bills when they were incarcerated? What this shows, of course, is how seriously society took the matter of bill paying at that time. It also showed that retribution was valued highly by the culture of the time.

Having to admit to others, “I lost my job can’t pay bills,” does have an implied connotation of failure. That takes a heavy emotional on the person directly involved as well as the others who depend on that person for all or a majority of their livelihood. The impact on relationships can be devastating.

The person who has to acknowledge,” I lost my job can’t pay bills,” incurs a very real vulnerability that can be difficult to guard oneself against even with advance preparation. As long as our sense of self-worth is closely tied with what we do to earn a living, this will continue to be a reality.

Lost My Job Can’t Pay Bills

Imagine having to say I lost my job can’t pay bills. That flies in the face of everything we have been taught all our lives. First of all, the notion of even having bills we could not pay is foreign to most people. We used to be taught the basic value of saving for a rainy day and delaying the purchase of most things, with the exception of our home and our car, we historically just did not spend what we didn’t have. Actually, until relatively recently, we could not spend what we didn’t have.

Not since the Great Depression of the late 1920’s and the 1930’s have such vast numbers of people had to say I lost my job can’t pay bills. We think of soup kitchens and bread lines as things out of John Steinbeck and the “Grapes of Wrath.” not a saga of modern life. The last two thirds of the twentieth century have largely been characterized by periods of prosperity where the ability to pay bills has been available to many people.

When I was growing up, rampant unemployment, the kind necessitating people to say I lost my job can’t pay bills was an unheard thing ,particularly among people I knew. People didn’t NOT pay bills. It just wasn’t done.

It must be horrible to have to say I lost my job can’t pay bills to someone who depends on you. I really can’t imagine what that would be like.
